Today we were due to go Ziller rafting, but this is dependent on the power generation authority deciding to release water down the river. Normally they do this Fri and Mon/Tues but this week they have not needed to as there has been plenty of rain so no rafting for us. The weather has really improved and looks set to be hot for the rest of the holiday. Instead of Ziller rafting, Martin, Stuart and Stephen have opted to go Ape (rope work).
Esther and I quickly booked to go on a nice long coach trip to a village with a glass workshop and then on to Achensee.
This trip was really brilliant. The glass blowing was far more interesting that I'd have expected and we bought a lovely swan just like they were making in the demonstration. I also bought lots of Xmas ornaments.
Achensee was also fascinating. We had lunch and then strolled along the lake. It was very cold but we paddled nevertheless. Then we went to the museum to the family that had discovered and developed the oil bearing rocks. It was very interesting. Apparently in the early 1900s this chap (forget his name just now) discovered the rock and started exploiting it by extracting the oil. He was blinded in an accident and his 10 children aged between 1 and 17 years took over the operation. Gosh - his wife must have been continually pregnant!
